Meet Your CounselorTips and Hints

Hi! I'm your counselor, Mr. Strausser.

This 2010-11 school year is my 4th year as counselor at St. Edward. Before coming to St. Edward I worked in other schools as a teacher, counselor , and school psychologist. I like working at St. Edward because I enjoy being able to work with students of many different ages. Each age and grade has special and fun qualities. I also like working here because I'm only about one block from home! Besides my three children being St. Edward graduates, my wife, Ann, also graduated from St. Edward.

I grew up in a small town about two hours south of Waterloo called North English. (And yes, there is a South English about five miles south of North English!) My graduating class from English Valleys High School had about 65 students. While going there I enjoyed lots of activities like chorus, band, plays, student council, football, track, newspaper, and yearbook. I completed all my college work at UNI in Cedar Falls and am a faithful fan and supporter of anything Panther.

What is a school counselor anyway?
School counselors are trained to help students with typical issues that students face all the time. Some of these are: Making and keeping friends; Dealing with mean kids and bullies; Meeting classroom behavior expectations; Completing schoolwork on time with good quality; Parent and family issues; Coping with loss like death or divorce, and; Feeling good about yourself. Besides these typical issues, your school counselor will try to help you with more difficult ones also. If your counselor doesn't have the training to help with an issue, he or she will help you or your parents find people who can help.

Counselors will meet with students individually, in pairs, and in small groups as well as sometimes presenting classroom group lessons.

Flying Geese

AMAZING!!
**Your heart pumps blood through 60,000 miles of veins and arteries. That's about 2.5 times around the world!
**The first ball-point pen was invented about 70 years ago, but the first pencil was used about 450 years ago!
**Even though the first airtight canned foods were invented in 1809, the first can opener was not invented until 1858. Before
that people used hammers, nails, and axes!
**The first alarm clock was invented in 1787 by Levi Hutchins, but it only rang at 4:00 A.M.!
**On average, we humans blink about 17,280 times per day!
